Since the days of the Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés
suggestions have been made to construct here an interoceanic canal, but
estimated costs proved prohibitive. The Tehuantepec National Railroad
connects the ports of Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf of Mexico and Salina
Cruz on the Pacific.
